Woman Claims Customer Threw High Chair, Screamed at Staff in Video Viewed 2M Times

Last week, a woman recounted one of the “most disrespectful” things that has happened to her while working in the service industry.

In a now-viral TikTok video with 2 million views, gastropub manager Courtney Alayna (@courtneyalayna) claimed that a customer once threw a highchair at her after screaming at some of the members of her staff.

“I am in the office one day, printing beer lists and a hostess comes back to me and she’s like crying, and she’s like: ‘can you come up and help the other hostess with this situation,'” said Alayna at the beginning of the story.

When the hostess told Alayna that they were dealing with an upset customer, Alayna followed her employee back to the front of the restaurant to intervene.

“I see this guest, like, full-on screaming at a 16-year-old girl [the other hostess] and she is sobbing,” said Alayna, “So I step in.”

But when Alayna tried to talk to the customer, he responded with: “I’m actually not talking to you, I’m talking to her [the hostess], so please back up and respect my personal space.” Alayna, however, stood her ground and explained to the customer that he could no longer speak with her employee.

After some back and forth, the customer finally admitted that he was upset because the hostess told him he’d have to wait for a table, as none were available. According to Alayna, he thought the teenager was lying, but the TikToker confirmed that she was, in fact, telling the truth.

Alayna offered to add the man’s name to the list, but this only upset him more.

“She already put me on the list,” Alayna recalled him saying. She apologized for the delay but explained that there was nothing else they could do. Unfortunately, that’s when things went from bad to worse.

“He loses it, and he starts going off about what a C-word I am and I’m an idiot…and I just go, ‘Okay, I’m really sorry. Can you please calm down?’,” she said.

Eventually, he threatened to call the restaurant’s owners. Alayna, perhaps calling his bluff, encouraged him to do so, but he backed down. When she pulled out her phone to dial the owners, he “[grabbed] a high chair from the hostess stand and [chucked] it at [her].”

Alayna did not specify whether the interaction happened before or during the pandemic. However, she’s not the first to experience violent behavior from a customer, especially in recent months.

According to Insider, “violence against retail workers has spiked during the pandemic.”

The outlet reported that “80 percent of workers said in a poll earlier this year that they’ve experienced hostile behavior from customers who didn’t want to follow safety protocols, and 39 percent said they were leaving their jobs because of it.”

Newsweek also previously reported that the country’s current restaurant worker shortage is largely due to “customer behavior.”

Commenters on Alayna’s video were appalled by the customer’s actions.

“I will never understand the people that have the audacity to flip out on the teenage workers,” said Kalee Jo.

“I don’t know why people think eating at a restaurant is a right,” commented Maddie Abel. “You will not die if you don’t get into this Red Robin.”

“Throwing a CHAIR??? Bestie, call the cops next time,” added Spiceepirate.

“What kind of punk bully berates a young girl in that situation. NEVER APOLOGIZE,” jpharleyd51 said. “Refuse service and call the cops.”
