The Future of Christianity

Three trends that are affecting the Church in America.

The following is adapted from remarks delivered at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, on May 1, 2023.

What is the future of Christianity? It’s an enormous topic. More than one billion people are Christians worldwide. There are churches in every culture and circumstance. Therefore, the future of Christianity is different in each part of the world. In South America, it is likely that the most vital and fastest growing forms of Christianity will be Protestant. Not just Protestant in general, but charismatic, evangelical, in an American way. China and Asia could also be affected by the same trend. It’s a global trend, and historians may look back and describe it as religious Americanization of the entire world.

But I’m not Philip Jenkins. I do not have the same command of global trends within Christianity as Philip Jenkins. In order to keep my topic manageable I will limit myself to speculations regarding the future of Christianity in…
