The Castle Crumbles
A Kansas City indictment stands out from the others.
Andrew Lester was “scared to death.”
That’s what he told police of the moment he shot a teenager who turned up at his front door in the middle of the night. Why wouldn’t we believe him?
Lester, an 84 year old veteran and former mechanic, lives alone in Kansas City. It is one of the United States’ most dangerous cities. He said he was just about to go to sleep around 10 p.m., when he first heard the doorbell. The home had a security system but it was inoperable for a long time.
According to his story, when the elderly gentleman reached the front door of the house, he opened the interior and saw in the darkness a figure trying open the exterior glass doors. He fired two times, striking Ralph Yarl twice in the head.
Yarl was 16 years old and had gone to the wrong address to pick up his two brothers after a visit to a friend. He survived and is now recovering.
After a nationwide outcry and soft intervention…
