Olivia Munn Talks Motherhood Amid John Mulaney Breakup Rumors
One of the oddest things about the John Mulaney–Olivia Munn tabloid cycle is that it’s happening at all. Not that the story of their relationship doesn’t merit it; it’s just that comedians rarely take up the space that our more traditional stars do. Maybe that’s changing as the comedian-actor divide dissolves, and more and more of the rarified actors date S.N.L. types. And maybe the fact that the comedian’s P.R. isn’t as buttoned-up makes for good fodder. The Mulaney–Munn story is getting told through the Peoples and the Us Weeklys of the world in part because Munn is one of those more traditional star-types, but also because it is fast-paced and changeable—like, now, sooner than one would have expected, there are breakup rumors.
In May, there was the divorce announcement and the publicly discussed rehab for Mulaney (plus, the devastating-in-its-simplicity divorce statement from his wife, Anna Marie Tendler: “I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage. I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.”) Munn and Mulaney were “linked” before becoming a confirmed couple, with tabloids explaining they re-met at church. Then the rumored baby and then, swiftly, the confirmed baby on Late Night With Seth Meyers. And now? As of Sunday, there is a rumor by some anonymous source that they’re breaking up. Or going to break up. Or, perhaps, that nobody knows what’s going to happen but they were never set up for success.
“This has been an imperfect relationship from the start,” a source told Us Weekly. Munn’s “inner circle” is “concerned,” per the rag, with the source adding, “Even though Olivia’s going to be a wonderful mother and has great support behind her, Olivia’s friends just don’t see these two being a couple in a year’s time.” They will “make great parents,” but “nobody knows yet if they’re going to do that together or apart.” (This was all pre-rumored in some new media, like a blind post on DeuxMoi before it was signal-boosted by a “sweaty, visibly ill man” on TikTok.)
And then, as soon as the rumors began, the rumors were counter-rumored. Entertainment Tonight reports that those reports were incorrect, and spoke with Munn in light of her new film Violet.
“Justine [Bateman, director of Violet] and I had a long conversation about [motherhood] the other day, honestly, I’m just excited about meeting whoever it is, and bringing a little person into this world,” she says. Though she didn’t mention Mulaney at all and it is a very generic quote, that is the headline now. Munn on motherhood. What’s next? Only time will tell. In short, round and round the rumor mill goes. Where it stops nobody knows.
