According to Daily Mail, the American Civil Liberties Union threatened Memphis hospitals with lawsuits to the Department of Health and Human Services and Office for Civil Rights if they did not resume transgender operations for patients prior to 2022. Now, the hospital claims it will “move forward” with the surgeries prior to the end of 2018.
Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare was threatened by the ACLU with a lawsuit for Chris Evans, a 19 year-old who had his surgery scheduled for December. The ACLU canceled Evans’ surgery. Evans is alleged to have gender dysphoria. According to the ACLU his surgery is necessary even though the nature of it was not clear.
“Ending medically essential healthcare for one specific group of people on the basis of sex, either by formal written policies or simply practice is discrimination” said Lucas Cameron-Vaughn from ACLU. He also stated that the group will “evaluate if it is necessary to do so.” [they] You will need to file a complaint once again with the Office of Civil Rights [they] Have a response from hospital
The ACLU demanded that surgery be rescheduled no later than December 31, 2022.
