‘Great Is The Artemis Of The Ephesians!’


As I mentioned earlier, I just returned from a six-day trip to the Seven Churches of Revelation. The image shown above is from a pillar found in the ruins of St. John’s Basilica of St. John (6th century), near Ephesus. It is the place where Apostle John was buried (nobody is sure where his body is). Here’s the path we took:

It wasn’t a religious trip, but rather one sponsored by the Turkish tourism office, for the sake of encouraging Christian tourism to the region. It was, however, primarily a religious pilgrimage to Orthodox Christianity for me. I wasn’t sure what to expect visiting the ruins of these ancient cities. I was open to all possibilities. I didn’t know much at all about the early church in this region. They were not the only sites of early Christian churches, but the first-century Christian communities (“churches”) in those cities were the ones addressed by Christ, through the prophet John the Theologian, in the opening chapters of Revelation.
