The award-winning novelist Joyce Carol Oates has been roundly criticized for posting controversial remarks regarding the Pledge Of Allegiance and Southern schools.

“In all my years of being in school as a student & being a teacher I have never once witnessed anyone pledging allegiance to a flag. Maybe some schools down South? Not mainstream America. Joyce Carol Oates posted a tweet on Saturday. “Sounds like an old rerun ‘Gunsmoke.’

Academy of Achievement describes Oates as “America’s First Woman of Letters,” a prolific writer and National Book Award winner. She was awarded the National Humanities Medal by the Obama administration in 2010 for her contributions to American literature over a lifetime.

Twitter users were quick with their corrections and challenges to 84-year-old Oates in spite of her undisputed literary achievements.
