
The award-winning novelist Joyce Carol Oates has been roundly criticized for posting controversial remarks regarding the Pledge Of Allegiance and Southern schools.

Academy of Achievement describes Oates as “America’s First Woman of Letters,” a prolific writer and National Book Award winner. She was awarded the National Humanities Medal by the Obama administration in 2010 for her contributions to American literature over a lifetime.
