Ecuador is facing disciplinary action after homophobic chants were made against Chile in the World Cup’s opening match against Qatar



FIFA, the World Cup’s governing body, launched a disciplinary investigation into homophobic chants by Ecuadorian supporters against a country not related to their country in the opening match.

The chants were sung during Ecuador’s match against Qatar at Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday. Ecuadorian fans chanted, “Anyone who does not jump is a Chilean.” [homophobic insult]”

Ecuador won 2-0 over Qatar.

It was the first World Cup when a country hosting the World Cup lost their opening game.

The Ecuadorians made fun of Chile’s inability to compete at the World Cup. They filed a lawsuit against Ecuador to claim Ecuador’s spot at the international soccer games. They also shouted, “Chile can see it on TV.”

FIFA was asked to disqualify Ecuador because a FIFA player allegedly used a fake passport and birth certificate in order to play. Chileans filed a formal appeal after FIFA refused change the teams to be entered in July. It later punished Ecuador by reducing the points for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
