According to a recent lawsuit, a Florida woman accuses staff at Celebrity Cruises for mishandling the dead body of her husband, which led to it decomposing severely.

A passenger aged 79 died just two days after Celebrity Equinox left Fort Lauderdale to embark on an 8-day Caribbean cruise. Robert Jones died on board the Celebrity Cruises Equinox on August 15, 2022.

The lawsuit alleges that cruise staff kept the body of Jones in a walk-in beverage cooler. The lawsuit alleges cruise personnel told Jones’ wife her husband, who had been married for 55 years, would be stored in the ship’s morgue until the ship docked to Fort Lauderdale.

Marilyn Jones claims that the cruise staff discouraged her from taking the body of her husband off the ship after it docked at San Juan, Puerto Rico. According to NBC News the lawsuit claims that cruise staff told the widow there was a “50/50” chance that the coroner’s office would have the body for an autopsy and then release it to a burial home. The suit claims that cruise staff warned the widow of a “50/50 chance” the coroner’s office would take possession of the body to perform an autopsy before releasing it to a funeral home, according to NBC News.
