UPDATE: As this article was publishing, officials were holding a press conference regarding the crash. Per Cpl. Justin Dunn of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, three people were killed in the accident: two in the train and one in the dump truck.

An Amtrak train with 243 passengers and 12 crew members on board derailed Monday afternoon in north-central Missouri, near the town of Mendon. The train struck a dump truck and turned over on its side. The train was traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago

Video from the scene shortly after the accident provides chilling insight:

You can hear how shaken the man filming the scene is.

BNO shared additional photos from a passenger.

Per CNN:

“There are approximately 243 passengers onboard with early reports of injuries,” company officials said in a statement. “Local authorities are currently assisting customers and we have deployed Amtrak resources to assist.”

Three people are being taken to University Hospital in Columbia, according to a hospital spokesperson. The conditions of the patients is unknown.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, approximately eight train cars derailed.

Per KCTV5:

Missouri Governor Mike Parson posted the following on Facebook following the accident: “We are saddened to hear of the Amtrak train derailment in Chariton County this afternoon. Missouri Department of Public Safety, Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers, and other emergency management personnel are responding. We ask Missourians to join us in praying for all those impacted.”

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas tweeted: “Having relied on Amtrak to cross our state throughout my college years and long after, I remember the ride well. My heart goes out to the passengers and all impacted by today’s event and I extend my thanks to those responding to today’s derailment on the scene and at the hospital.”

Missouri Senator Josh Hawley’s office indicated they were keeping close tabs on the situation.

This marks the second Amtrak collision in as many days, following another crossing accident in rural California on Sunday. In that incident, a train collided with a passenger vehicle at an unguarded crossing. Three people were killed and two others were seriously injured.
